Empress Theodora Apartments

Discover Empress Theodora Apartments

In the heart of Santa Croce, among the narrow lanes of traditional Venice far from the usual tourist routes, are four new apartments with luxurious details, inspired by four women – symbols of liberation, wisdom, and courage – who inspired and changed the course of history in Venice.

The elegant, finely restored rooms pay homage to Marietta Barovier, a pioneer of glass art, the sophisticated literary icon Giustina Renier Michiel, William Shakespeare’s famous character Portia, and the Empress Theodora, wife and witty advisor to Justinian – all charismatic and extremely intelligent personalities who revolutionized the role of women in the societies of their time.

Barovier Apartment

2 Bedrooms – 775 sq. ft.

Max Occupancy: 4 adults/ 4 adults + 2 children

The palette of this sophisticated apartment recalls the color combination of the iconic Rosetta pearls created by Marietta Barovier , the glassmaking pioneer and passionate artist known to history as “the woman who loved fire.”

Created in the late 1400s in the ancient furnaces of Murano, these magical glass pearls, said to have supernatural powers, were imbued with spiritual significance.

Layers of blue, white and red glass merge to create the famous Barovier pearl, and the design of the apartment borrows these iconic colors, evoking them carefully with each finishing touch: sodalite blue marble and red jasper for the bathrooms, while the fine arabesque damask wallpaper alternates neutral shades of creamy white with decorative touches of bright blue and vermilion.

The two-level apartment consists of:

  • Living room with a sofa bed.
  • Kitchenette.
  • Two bedrooms with double bed and closet.
  • Two fine marble bathrooms equipped with double sink and spacious shower.
  • Independent entrance.

Giustina Apartment

1 Bedroom – 430 sq. ft.

Max. Occupancy: 3 Adults/2 Adults + 2 children

Soft, delicate shades of cream to beige and gold illuminate this apartment as a reminder of the elegance and grace of Giustina Renier Michiel , the “dogaressa ” of Venice who inspired the entire design scheme.

In the early 1800s, this extremely cultured, intelligent, noble-spirited woman became a determined, courageous champion of Venetian life and the guiding force of a celebrated literary salon frequented by illustrious figures of the time.

Luxury accessories, arabesque silk wallpaper, onyx marble and fine, dark oak floors embellish the refined, functional rooms, creating an ideal point of departure to explore the unknown corners of Venice.

Located on one level on the first floor, the apartment consists of:

  • Living room with sofa bed.
  • Kitchenette.
  • A bedroom with double bed, and an Oriental-style bathroom in gold onyx, with double sink and spacious shower tiled in an exquisite mosaic pattern of Emperador marble.
  • Independent entrance.

Portia Apartment

1 Bedroom – 430 sq. ft.

Max. Occupancy: 3 adults/ 2 adults + 2 children

Portia is the protagonist of Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” and the muse that inspired this marvelous apartment.

Beautiful, cultured, and extremely intelligent, she was a woman who defied conventions and manipulated – with wit and good intentions – the events and characters of the comedy.

She is portrayed with a flame-red dress that reflects her passionate temperament, and the same shades of red are used to decorate the rooms that pay homage to her: Red Levanto marble and Venetian red silk damask wallpaper which, combined with gold glass mosaic work and fine oak parquet floors, make the style even more elegant and refined.

Located on the first floor, the Portia apartment consists of:

  • Living room with sofa bed.
  • Kitchenette.
  • One bedroom with double bed.
  • Italian marble bathroom with a spacious shower and double sink.
  • Independent entrance.

Theodora Apartment

2 Bedrooms – 645 sq. ft.

Max. Occupancy: 4 adults/ 4 adults + 2 children

Theodora, wife of the emperor Justinian, was a controversial figure – a highly intelligent and able sovereign who courageously championed the dignity and rights of women, using her wisdom to influence the politics of the time to improve conditions for women.

This very beautiful and emancipated woman was a complex, fascinating personality, as multifaceted as the sparkling reflections of the tiles of the famous mosaic that portrays her.

The apartment dedicated to Theodora is exquisite and refined, decorated with luxury details that pair gold with brilliant colors, creating a lively palette of blue, green, beige and brown.

Located on the second and top floor, its spaces are versatile and well-distributed:

  • Living room with sofa bed.
  • Kitchenette.
  • Two bedrooms with double beds, closet and en-suite bathrooms tiled with gold onyx marble and green granite.
  • Independent entrance.
